How it works

smart irrigation system

Map Time Explorer is based on irrisat®, the first irrigation advisory system based on satellite imagery

It was developed by Ariespace srl, a spin-off company of the Department of Agriculture of the University of Naples Federico II.
  • Reducing water and energy waste
  • Optimization of production and labor
  • Real-time monitoring of crop development
  • Updated weather information

Estimation of irrigation needs using Sentinel-2 satellite image processing.

The Sentinel satellite constellation is part of Copernicus, one of the most ambitious scientific and technical programs funded in recent years by the European Union and the European space agency. Satellite images, combined with weather forecast models of up to five days, enable crop monitoring with high temporal frequency (observation interval over the same area of about 5 days) and spatial resolution (10-20 meters).

Identification of areas actually irrigated

For Reclamation and Irrigation consortia, IRRISAT® provides identification of actual irrigated areas (parcel by parcel with a detail of 10 x 10 meters) current and historical estimates of irrigation requirements using time series of satellite imagery coupled with station weather data or provided by climate reanalysis (such as the ERA5 product, produced by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts).

All information directly on the web

Irrigation advice, maps of irrigated areas, and estimates of irrigated volumes are distributed to end users, individual farms and drainage and irrigation consortia, through smartphones (webapp) and the Internet (WebGIS, called Map Time Explorer MTE on which the SIGRIAN system is also based)

How It Works

The platform is based on an innovative technology that integrates satellite observations with high spatial and temporal resolution weather forecasts. By means of original calculation codes, Irrisat makes it possible to display maps of daily irrigation requirements, starting from the last irrigation carried out and with a forecast up to five days ahead. In addition, the system, through simple and intuitive screens, allows analysis of crop status and weather data (evapotranspiration, irrigation, rainfall, temperature, vegetation indices).
